신 시작(詩作) 지침서
1 시 한 편을 이해하면
골칫거리가 생길 것임.
2 시 한 편을 데리고 살면
고독하게 죽게 될 것임.
3 시 두 편을 데리고 살면
한쪽에 부정(不貞)을 저지르게 될 것임.
4 시 한 편을 품으면
아이 하나를 덜 낳게 될 것임.
5 시 두 편을 품으면
아이 둘을 덜 낳게 될 것임.
6 왕관을 쓴 채 시를 쓰면
발각되고 말 것임.
7 왕관을 쓰지 않고 시를 쓰면
자기 말고는 속이지 못할 것임.
8 어떤 시에 성을 내면
남자들의 조롱을 받게 될 것임.
9 어떤 시에 계속 성을 내면
여자들의 조롱을 받게 될 것임.
10 대놓고 시를 매도하면
신발에 오줌이 가득 찰 것임.
11 권력을 위해 시를 포기하면
많은 권력을 얻게 될 것임.
12 자기 시에 대해 떠벌리면
바보들의 사랑을 받게 될 것임.
13 자기 시에 대해 떠벌리고 바보들을 좋아하면
시를 더는 못 쓰게 될 것임.
14 자기 시를 갖고 인기를 끌려고 안달하면
달빛 아래 수탕나귀 신세가 될 것임.
15 시 한 편을 쓴 후 동료의 시를 칭찬하면
아리따운 연인을 얻게 될 것임.
16 시 한 편을 쓴 후 동료의 시를 지나치게 칭찬하면
연인이 도망치고 말 것임.
17 남의 시에 대해 권리를 주장하면
심장이 두 배로 커질 것임.
18 자기 시를 나체로 쏘다니게 하면
죽음을 두려워하게 될 것임.
19 죽음을 두려워하면
자신의 시로 구원받게 될 것임.
20 죽음을 두려워하지 않으면
자신의 시로 구원을 받을 수도 받지 못할 수도 있을 것임.
21 시 한 편을 탈고하면
열정의 텅 빈 항적(航跡)에 휩싸여
백지의 입맞춤을 받게 될 것임.

1 If a man understands a poem,
he shall have troubles.
2 If a man lives with a poem,
he shall die lonely.
3 If a man lives with two poems,
he shall be unfaithful to one.
4 If a man conceives of a poem,
he shall have one less child.
5 If a man conceives of two poems,
he shall have two children less.
6 If a man wears a crown on his head as he writes,
he shall be found out.
7 If a man wears no crown on his head as he writes,
he shall deceive no one but himself.
8 If a man gets angry at a poem,
he shall be scorned by men.
9 If a man continues to be angry at a poem,
he shall be scorned by women.
10 If a man publicly denounces poetry,
his shoes will fill with urine.
11 If a man gives up poetry for power,
he shall have lots of power.
12 If a man brags about his poems,
he shall be loved by fools.
13 If a man brags about his poems and loves fools,
he shall write no more.
14 If a man craves attention because of his poems,
he shall be like a jackass in moonlight.
15 If a man writes a poem and praises the poem of a fellow,
he shall have a beautiful mistress.
16 If a man writes a poem and praises the poem of a fellow overly,
he shall drive his mistress away.
17 If a man claims the poem of another,
his heart shall double in size.
18 If a man lets his poems go naked,
he shall fear death.
19 If a man fears death,
he shall be saved by his poems.
20 If a man does not fear death,
he may or may not be saved by his poems.
21 If a man finishes a poem,
he shall bathe in the blank wake of his passion
and be kissed by white paper.

* 마크 스트랜드(Mark Strand, 1934년 4월 11일 ~ 2014년 11월 29일, 향년 80세)는 캐나다 태생의 미국 시인, 수필가, 번역가이다.
스트랜드는 1934년 4월 11일 캐나다의 프린스 에드워드 섬에서 태어났다.
그는 1957년 오하이오의 안티오크 대학에서 학사 학위를 받았고, 예일 대학교에 입학하여 쿡 상과 버긴 상을 수상했다.
1959년 학사 학위를 받은 후, 스트랜드는 풀브라이트 장학금으로 피렌체 대학교에서 1년 동안 공부했다.
1962년 아이오와 대학교에서 석사 학위를 받았다.
스트랜드는 Collected Poems(Alfred A. Knopf, 2014)를 포함한 수많은 시집의 저자였다.

그는 뉴욕의 컬럼비아 대학교에서 영어와 비교문학을 가르쳤다.
마크 스트랜드는 2014년 11월 29일 뉴욕 브루클린에서 80세의 나이로 사망했다.
