좋은 재목(材木)
태양, 하늘, 공기와 빛을 얻기 위해
싸울 필요가 없이,
넓은 들판에 홀로 선 나무는
자신이 원하는 비를 항상 누렸지만,
결코 숲의 제왕이 되지 못했네,
단지 키 작은 관목으로 살다 죽었네.
자기 땅을 소유하고 경작하기 위해
열심히 일해 본 적 없는 사람은
필요한 태양과 창공 그리고 빛과 공기를
쟁취해 본 적이 없는 사람은
결코 남자다운 남자가 된 적이 없고
단지 태어난 그대로 나약하게 살다 죽었네.
좋은 재목은 안락한 상태에서 성장하지 않는다.
바람이 강할수록 강한 나무로 자라고
창공이 멀수록 더 높이 뻗어 나고
폭풍이 세찰수록 더 강해진다.
태양과 추위, 비와 눈을 겪으며
나무나 사람이 좋은 재목으로 성장한다.
수목의 성장이 울창한 곳에서
동량지재(棟梁之材)를 찾아볼 수 있다.
부러진 가지에
많은 바람과 치열한 투쟁의
상흔을 간직한 채
그들은 별들에게 자문을 구한다.
이것이 삶의 법칙이다.

The tree that never had to fight
For sun and sky and air and light
But stood out in the open plain
And always got its share of rain,
Never became a forest king
But lived and died a scrubby thing.

Never became a manly man
But lived and died as he began.
Good timber does not grow with ease,
The stronger wind, the stronger trees,
The further sky, the greater length,
The more the storm the more the strength.
By sun and cold, by rain and snow,
In trees and men good timbers grow.
Where thickest lies the forest growth
We find the patriarchs of both.
And they hold counsel with the stars
Whose broken branches show the scars
Of many winds and much of strife.
This is the common law of life.

* 더글러스 말록(Douglas Malloch, 1877년 5월 5일 ~ 1938년 7월 2일, 향년 61세)은 미국의 명상 시인, 칼럼니스트, 단편 소설 작가이다.
말록 형제는 목재 산업의 중심지로 알려진 미시간 주 머스키건에서 태어났으며, 숲, 벌목 캠프, 제재소 및 목재 숲 속에서 자랐다.
그는 목재 산업에 종사하는 사람들 사이에서 유명해졌다.
환경보전에 관한 시작(詩作)을 했으며, 그는 지역적으로나 전국적으로 "벌목공의 시인"으로 알려졌다.
그는 전국 언론 여성 연맹 NFPW(National Federation of Press Women)의 창립자인 뉴스우먼 헬렌 밀러(Helen Miller)와 결혼했다.
그는 시카고의 무역 신문 American Lumberman의 부편집장이었다.
생명에 관한 서정 "Lyric of life"등을 발표했으며, 다른 많은 작품 외에도 Round River Drive와 "Be the Best of Whatever You Are"를 쓴 것으로 유명하다.
1937년 Michigan State Song, "Michigan, My Michigan"의 새로운 가사를 쓰도록 위임받기도 했다.
